The Sturgeon Bay School Board decided Wednesday to have Kobussen Buses, Ltd. take over the school district’s transportation services. The board expects the switch will save the district about $200,000 per year.
Superintendent Joe Stutting says there were a few reasons the board chose Kobussen over two other bidders.
Contracting out to Kobussen means the school district will no longer have transportation employees. However Stutting says the board doesn’t expect many layoffs within the district. Current bus drivers and other transportation staff will have the opportunity to work for Kobussen while some may choose to retire. Only those who choose not to work for Kobussen would be laid off.
Stutting hopes the contract with Kobussen would begin July 1, 2013.
Stutting will be working with Kobussen over the next few weeks and plans to present a finalized contract to the board during the January 16, 2013 School Board meeting.
