A local lawmaker has announced plans to introduce legislation that would create a non-partisan process for redistricting.
State Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) says under the bill the map-drawing responsibility would be put into the hands of the Legislative Reference Bureau.
Hansen says the next round of redistricting doesn't happen for another eight years so he calls it a "perfect opportunity" to get something in place.
"When you do it with legislators that probably won't be there in 2020 I think it makes it more fair," says Hansen.
Hansen says the measure would also provide greater transparency and public input by requiring a non-partisan Redistricting Advisory Commission to conduct no fewer than three public hearings on the plan.
Senator Hansen says the bill is currently being drafted and he's hoping to obtain bi-partisan support.
