Volunteer Center Connection

Holidays are busy—no doubt about it.  But volunteering can help take a little stress out of your day by “putting things in perspective” as they say.  Take a look at the ways you can help this holiday season:

If you have a special skill or talent that you’d like to share with the members of the Boys and Girls Club, they’d love to invite you to come in and join them! Share an activity one time or several. Build a bird house or teach them how to knit—there’s lots you can do to help develop the character of these young kids. Contact Jessica at (920) 746-5125 or cpodc@bgcdoorcounty.org.

Get in the giving mood by helping out at the Children's Christmas Stores presented by the Family Centers of Door County. Volunteers will assist children ages 4 - 12 who will shop for and wrap presents for family members.  Warm your heart this Christmas season and be part of some great holiday memories! Store locations are on Saturdays throughout Door County.  Contact Sara at (920) 495-7702 or by e-mail at sara@familycentersdc.com.

Many older adults feel isolated and lonely especially around the holidays but Neighbor-to-Neighbor Volunteer Caregivers is out to change that.  This holiday season, consider becoming a Peer Companion.  Take an hour to make a personal visit to one of their clients or send a card or letter when you can’t stop by.  Telephone Peer Companions also reach out to these adults but strictly by phone calls, cards and letters. Holidays are tough for a lot of people.  A simple visit or phone call can make a real impact and a real difference.  Contact Ann at (920) 743-7800 or by e-mail director@neighbor-to-neighbor.org.

Many of you are looking for ways to help families in Door County over the holidays. There are numerous local organizations that have “Adopt a Family” type programs in place from shopping for gifts to picking up gift cards or picking up items for servicemen and women overseas.  Take a look and see how you help those who need it most.

Feed My People/Clothe My People:  Contact Ashley or Stella at (920) 743-9053  Programs include Adopt a Child or Adopt a Family

HELP of Door County:  Contact Chad or Jess at (920) 743-8785  Program includes Adopt a Family or Cards for Clients (purchase of gift cards to grocery stores, gas stations and local stores so that clients can shop for their families directly, giving a sense of empowerment).  Personal care items and cleaning product donations are also needed throughout the year.  Needs include:

Dish soap, kids soap, kids shampoo/conditioner, toilet cleaner, cleaning spray, toilet paper, baby wipes, diapers (size 4 and 5), tampons (regular and junior sizes) toilet paper and other cleaning supplies.

Young Adult Parent Support "YAPS" Program
Please consider "Adopting a Child" this Holiday Season from the Young Adult Parent Support Program.

"YAPS," a program of the Wellness Center of Door County, is planning its annual celebration for Sunday, December 16th, including a visit from Santa at "Jump On It" in Sturgeon Bay.

The YAPS program provides FREE individual and group support, education and family building events.

How does this work? Gift Cards can be picked up at the Wellness Center of Door County or Bay Pharmacy. There are trees at both locations with a variety of cards and wish lists to choose from. This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to provide a service for our community. Your family chooses one of our Gift Giving cards which reflect your selected child's age, sex and wish list for Santa. Purchase one or more of the items on your wish list.

We ask that all gifts be left unwrapped and that donors provide wrapping paper and tape with their gifts. This gives the young parents the opportunity to become part of the gift-giving process and a more connected feeling to providing for their children. Simply return your gifts to your contact person/site on or before Saturday, December 8.

Donations may also be delivered to YAPS at 448 N. 11th Place, Sturgeon Bay or pick-up may be arranged by calling (920) 559-0200. There is also a collection bucket located at The Wellness Center located at 312 N 5th and Jump On It located in the Cherry Point Mall in Sturgeon Bay. Gifts can also be returned to Bay Pharmacy in the Cherry Point Mall.

In many cases, the gifts you purchase for this child will be the only gifts they receive this holiday season. It is truly a magical moment for a child to witness gifts underneath their tree on Christmas morning. Please join me in providing that memory for the children in our program.

Local nursing homes and assisted living facilities also appreciate visitors and volunteers on holidays.  Frequently volunteers can help serve meals and visit with residents who don't have family in the area.  For information on these facilities, please contact the Volunteer Center directly at (920) 746-7704.

Door County Adopt a Soldier Program:  The following items are being collected to ship to servicemen and women overseas.  Please consider picking up a few items or making a monetary donation to help cover postage.  Contact Nancy Hutchinson at (920) 823-2164 for further information.
