If the necessary hurdles are cleared, another spectator sport could be coming to Door County in 2013: Semi-professional football.
The Door County Destroyers are the vision of Ryan Zuehlke and two of his teammates on a semi-pro team in Manitowoc, Chris LeCloux and Shane Hills. Zuehlke says they're excited to give the idea a go in Door County.
The team has already lined up a place to play -- Baileys Harbor Town Park -- and Zuehlke says they're now working on recruiting players and obtaining approval to join the Wisconsin State Football League.
Because it's 'pay to play,' the 33-year-old Zuehlke says semi-pro ball is "a beast of its own" and players really have to love the game to participate.
Games would be played on Saturday afternoons from late July through early November. Admission would be $5.
Zuehlke says an informational meeting is scheduled for Friday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Draft Haus in Sturgeon Bay. He says tryouts would likely be held in January.
