The Southern Door School Board has given the green light to putting in new bleachers at the high school football field.
The Board voted 6-1 Tuesday to award Green Bay-based JW Industries the $183,000 contract to provide and install the new seating.
That's about $12,000 more than originally proposed but School Board President Dustin Miller says the more expensive design was required to make the bleachers "match up" with the newly-built concession stand and press box. He says the design also includes 41 stadium-style seats which will provide the district with fundraising options.
Miller says the new stands will hold just under a thousand spectators, nearly double the capacity of the old stands.
"We really want to give this community and the parents and the athletes the best thing they can get for the money involved," says Miller. "And this is something many generations can enjoy, not just today and tomorrow, but hopefully a lot of generations to come."
Overall, Miller says the district has committed to paying $75,000 of the cost, with the balance coming from donations.

The old bleachers, which were built in the 1960s, were deemed unsafe and removed this past summer.
Installation of the new bleachers is set to take place in the spring with a completion date of May 1, 2013.
