Guest Report - 'Walktober' A Chance To Flex Fitness Muscles

Hi, I am Madelyn DePrey from the YMCA guest reporting for Door County Daily News.com. The temperature is dropping, leaves are falling and visitors are fleeing, but fall in Door County does not have to mean a fall in your well-being. Lift your body, mind and spirit in October with the YMCA and Ministry Door County Medical Center as we celebrate “Walktober” – a community wellness campaign.

During the month of October, the Y will be offering several FREE opportunities for community members of all fitness levels to fall into fitness!  Pick up a “Walktober” calendar at the Y that will help you meet your activity goals, try a FREE new fitness class at the Y (like Cardio Drumming, Piloxing or Body Pump), or avoid the new chilly breeze with a walk on our indoor track. There are several ways to improve your wellbeing and the Y can help!

Events for kids include the Halloween Costume Exchange on Saturday the 6th, Super Kids Fun Night on the 19th, and a BOO Bash on the 26th.  Plus, child care is available while you work out! Top off the month with blood pressure checks, flu shots, bone density scans, and much more at the Community Health Fair at the Sturgeon Bay center on Tuesday the 23rd and fall really can mean FITNESS FOR ALL!

Help yourself by helping your health, but lend a hand to others too this month.  Join us at either Y location on Tuesday, October 2nd to honor a cancer survivor in your life on National LiveStrong Day.  Then take time to “Flow for Bo!” with a BodyFlow class at the Northern Door Y to support the Go Bo Foundation evenings at 5:30 the week of October 8-12th.

However you choose to improve your health and wellbeing this month, remember "'It takes 28 days to form a habit," according to Healthy Living Director Mary Claire McHugh. Many times, people give up on their fitness programs within the first few weeks.  So, when the alarm goes off in the morning and it's darker and colder, don't roll over and hit the snooze button. "Find an activity that you enjoy and try to stick with it for at least a month," McHugh says. "After a month, behavior patterns will begin to adapt and it will become easier.”

Fall into fitness with “Walktober” (sponsored by Ministry Door County Medical Center) at the Y this month! Visit http://www.doorcountyymca.org/ or call 920-743-4949 for more information.
