If aldermen give the go-ahead, bicyclists in Sturgeon Bay could see some new signs placed along sidewalks on Jefferson Street, 3rd Avenue and Madison Avenue instructing them to walk their bikes on the sidewalk.
The recommendation is coming from the Parking & Traffic Committee, which voted unanimously in favor of placing the signs (reading "Walk Your Bicycle on Sidewalk") to increase safety for bikers, pedestrians and motorists. Police Chief Arleigh Porter told the committee August 20 that many people ride their bikes on the sidewalks and may not be aware of people exiting businesses on those streets. Education would be done through bike rodeos, public service announcements and the city's website.
The City Council is set to vote on the matter at Tuesday's meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
