Recreational divers found the body of a man in Lake Michigan Saturday afternoon about one mile east of Whitefish Point in the township of Sevastopol
The divers called The United States Coast Guard around 3:15 PM, immediately after finding the remains.
The Coast Guard turned the remains over to the Door County Sherriff's Department, and they were transported to Green Bay for identification via dental records.
The Sheriff's Department believes the body to be that of a man who went missing on September 4, 1999, but are not revealing any names as of yet.
Sheriff Terry Vogel says the man was found near a shipwreck at a depth of about 225 feet; a depth that requires an expert diver to navigate. He was still wearing the dive gear he is believed to have died in more than 12 years ago.
