Tommy Thompson was the winner in the GOP U.S. Senate primary, Patrick Veeser narrowly edged Arnie Johnsrud in the Democratic primary for the 1st Assembly District, and Jamie Annoye finished on top in the Democratic primary for county clerk in Kewaunee County.
Thompson emerged from a four-candidate field, but it became evident as the returns started to come in that his chief competition was going to be Eric Hovde, who ended up in second. Mark Neumann finished third and Jeff Fitzgerald came in fourth.
Veeser outpolled Johnsrud in the race to see who'll take on incumbent Garey Bies, but the margin was extremely close -- just 31 votes. The final tally was 1582 to 1551.
The Kewaunee County clerk's Democratic primary was also tight, with Annoye edging incumbent Linda Teske 818 to 771. Christopher Baeb came in third with 213 votes.
