They're celebrating in Algoma this weekend for the annual "Shanty Days" festival. The event features live bands all weekend long, a wide array of food vendors, and kid friendly activities.
Executive Director of the Algoma Chamber of Commerce Pam Ritchie says this year's event has been going great so far.
Ritchie says the history behind the festival is honoring Algoma's fishing shanties, from a time when commercial fishing was a huge part of industry in the area.
A massive parade strolled down the streets of downtown Algoma Saturday afternoon.
The 5k Run/Walk this morning saw first place go to Brian Finnel with a time of 15:07. The first place female finisher was Lynn Fitzsimmons with a time of 19:29. Race organizer and owner of Succeed Health in Algoma Jody Anderson raced alongside her husband and three children; all five finished with 2nd or 3rd place medals in their categories.
Shanty Days will be capped off with fireworks Sunday evening at dusk.
