A 71-year-old Illinois man is dead after a bike accident at Peninsula State Park.
It happened Tuesday around 2 p.m. on the Sunset bicycle trail.
The Door County Sheriff's Department says Charles Andrus of Huntley, Illinois sustained severe head trauma in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Peninsula State Park Superintendent Kelli Bruns says officials believe the crash occurred when Andrus looked back at his riding partner and lost control, veering off the trail and into some large rocks.
Authorities say Andrus was not wearing a helmet.
The accident occurred near Weborg Point, a marshy area where Bruns says large rocks are used as rip-rap along the trail. "There's probably numerous sections of trail -- hiking, biking -- that utilize larger boulders to protect it from water damage or erosion," says Bruns.
Responding to the scene were Gibraltar Police and Gibraltar First Responders -- Bruns says they were already at the park for a separate bike accident -- along with Door County Emergency Services.
