An early morning fire destroyed a barn in southern Door County.
Several area departments and more than 70 firefighters responded to the blaze at 1003 Pleasant Ridge Road in the Town of Union.
It was reported to the Door County Sheriff's Department Tuesday around 4:40 a.m. Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Chief Curt Vandertie says a passerby reported seeing flames coming from the milk house.
The barn is owned by David and Dixie Englebert.
Vandertie says one head of cattle was lost in the fire. He says the owner estimated there were 35 to 40 cattle in the barn when the fire started and about 40 others outside. The animals were moved to other farms in the area.
Assisting BUG Fire were the Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, Luxemburg, Casco and Algoma fire departments. Because of the heat, Vandertie says crews from Egg Harbor and Jacksonport were also called in to provide additional manpower.
No firefighters were injured but Vandertie says Door County EMS was on hand to monitor firefighters and provide oxygen.
The chief says the fire is believed to have started in the area of the milk house. He says the cause is still being investigated.
