The distinctive Platform Supply Vessels being erected at Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay are starting to take shape. Bay Ship General Manager Gene Caldwell says things have ramped up, and the vessels are in full production in the iconic 311 building.
Caldwell says the contracts for the PSVs are unlike anything seen on the Great Lakes before, and are possible because of new areas opening up for oil exploration.
Caldwell adds the unique work has brought its own challenges to the crew working on the project.
The Platform Supply Vessel job has contributed to a run of full employment at Bay Ship that began in November of last year. Caldwell estimates that will continue at least into the start of 2013.
As of right now, he is planning on delivery of the first vessel late next summer.
