Hi, I’m Madelyn DePrey from the Door County YMCA guest reporting for DoorCountyDailyNews.com. Today’s topic: WALKING. Remember your first step? I sure don’t, but let me tell you: these legs are made for walking! Did you know that the average American spends more than 70 percent of their day sitting? According to Hippocrates, “Walking is Man’s best medicine.” I have to agree. Not only does walking burn calories and improve fitness, it can help prevent Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes. Studies have also shown that walking strengthens your bones and helps alleviate symptoms of depression. Plus, walking with a friend is the perfect opportunity to chitchat. The best part is: its FREE!
But after a long day in the office, it can be hard to motivate yourself to take those steps towards wellness. Walking with a group, in a safe, traffic-free environment is the answer! Great news: this summer you can walk into Wellness with us at the Sturgeon Bay Y. Meet at our outdoor track on Monday or Wednesday between 5pm and 6:30pm, Tuesday between 9 and 10am, or Thursday between 6 and 7am. This is FREE to Y members and nonmembers of all ages and fitness levels. There will be a YMCA instructor on hand to lead stretches, answer questions, and cheer you on. It takes just 3.3 laps around our track to reach a mile. How many miles can you put on those feet this summer? Feel free to bring your strollers, walking shoes, and positive energy! See you on the track as we walk into wellness! The Y’s Community Walking Program is sponsored by Ministry Door County Medical Center.
