Dirt and gravel disappeared under a coat of blacktop Monday as crews paved a short but important connection to the Ahnapee State trail.
The new connection -- about 700 feet in length -- links the trail with Memorial Drive.

Door County Parks Director George Pinney has said both the city and the county have had numerous requests for access to the trail from Memorial Drive. Previously the only safe access for east side residents has been at Utah Street, meaning walkers, runners and bikers have had to go about an extra half-mile (using 18th Place) to join the trail.
Future plans call for extending the Ahnapee State Trail between Utah Street and Michigan Street.
