State Representative Garey Bies (R – Sister Bay) was recently honored as the Legislator of the Year by the American Heart Association. Bies was recognized on June 7 in Madison during the AHA’s annual volunteer appreciation event. Bies says he’s honored by this award…
Bies was chosen due to his hard work and leadership in legislation he authored and was signed into law this session. The Open Gym Act provides Wisconsin school boards and charter schools immunity from liability if they open their facilities for recreational use by the public.
In addition, Bies introduced legislation closing a loophole in Wisconsin law. Existing law only prohibited the purchase and supply of cigarettes to minors. Bies worked to enforce a broader law to cover all tobacco products.
Bies says he was pleased to receive the accolades from the AHA but it’s never expected…
Bies also requested a legislative study to review 911 public safety communications in Wisconsin. A committee composed of state and local officials, emergency preparedness coordinators and health organization representatives, will meet over the next few months to develop legislation to strengthen the current 911 system.
