An unoccupied pontoon boat adrift in the waters of Sturgeon Bay Sunday morning prompted a search for a missing person but in the end only turned up a pair of flip-flops.
The initial call about the boat came in at just before 8:00 Sunday morning. According to the incident report from the Door County Sheriff’s Department, there were beer cans on the deck of the pontoon and it appeared there was a line wrapped around the propeller.
The Coast Guard began a search, but no one was located and the search was eventually suspended.
The pontoon boat belongs to Beach Harbor Resort and had been rented out and returned on Saturday. It was noticed to be missing Sunday morning. The flip flops were found in the water near the dock where the pontoon was tied.
Authorities now believe that an unknown person or persons took the boat from the Beach Harbor Resort early Sunday morning, had some motor trouble and possibly swam back to shore.
There has been no report of a missing person filed.
