If you need to be rescued from deteriorating ice in the waters off Door County, where you are may determine whether you will be billed for that rescue.
Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel says the county will not bill you for an emergency call.
However, local emergency responders can send you a bill. Brussels – Union – Gardner fire and rescue – the unit that probably catches the most ice rescue calls in the county – will send you a $500 invoice if they need to come out. Other departments are said to be considering the charge.
The US Coast Guard can not charge for a rescue. However if there is a local unit closer to the situation, they will defer to that department.
