The opening of the Soo Locks on Tuesday officially marked the start of the 2014 Great Lakes Shipping Season. But as you might guess, it’s off to a slow start because of the ice. Mark Gill, Director of Traffic Services for the US Coast Guard in Sault St. Marie talks about the ice on Lake Superior.
Gill says there are currently only six icebreakers working in Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and the Straits of Mackinaw. But more are on the way.
Icebreaking operations on portions of Green Bay are underway to open the Marinette / Menominee harbors.
