Less than five hours after casting his final vote in the State Assembly, Republican Representative Garey Bies of Sister Bay announced his candidacy for Wisconsin Secretary of State.
Bies says he started looking into running after a Madison newspaper suggested he might be a candidate for the statewide office.
Democrat Doug LaFollette has been Wisconsin’s Secretary of State since 1983 and is seeking another term.
At least four other Republicans and one candidate from the Constitution Party are running for the office. A Republican primary would be held in August.
There has been talk in the state legislature for several years about eliminating the Secretary of State position.
The Assembly adjourned for the year this morning at 4:45 a.m.
