Door County dispatchers and emergency personnel used coordinates from a cell phone to locate an ice fisherman on a four-wheeler lost in Tuesday night’s storm and send help.
Brussels – Union – Gardner Fire Chief Curt Vandertie was at the scene at around 5:00 Tuesday night.
Vandertie says once they knew where the man was, and knew he was in no danger, they needed to figure out how to get to him. With the wind and snow, there was zero visibility on the Bay, so safety of rescuers was a concern. There was also a concern about the condition of the ice. Vandertie says they found another ice fisherman – the fiancé of a paramedic -- who was willing to assist.
The man was able to drive the four-wheeler back to the shore. His name has not been released.
In addition to the BUG responders, Southern Door fire, Sturgeon Bay fire and the Coast Guard were involved in the rescue.
