Frequently
asked questions:
1. How fast
is it compared to...?
If you are in the country and normally connect at
26,400 kbps then our dish will be about 15 times faster!
That means a file download that now takes you an hour, will
only take about 4 minutes. Yes, that is minutes instead of
hours. This is great for windows updates, virus updates,
viewing family pictures, music, and much more.
2. Can it be
used on a laptop/notebook computer?
Yes, a USB adapter is available for $149.
additonal.
3. Can I use
it on more than one computer?
Yes, since the plans are usage based, you are
free to use it on as many computers as you wish. You will need
to have the computers networked and can use the free proxy
service built into our software. The SatDirect(tm) proxy is
faster and more efficient the Windows(tm) connection sharing.
You can also use it with a connection sharing program such as
WinProxy
or use the ICS built in to some versions of MS-Windows(tm). Our
installers can provide you with an estimate for networking your
computers.
4. What are
the advantages of "One-way" over a "Two-way" satellite system?
One-way is faster because the upstream runs over
your phone line making response times are three to six
times faster than two way systems resulting in far less
latency.
Our
one-way systems use open standards so they handle
protocols like FTP and POP3 email better than
proprietary two way systems.
Our
one-way systems are far less expensive (about one
third to one fourth the cost of two way systems).
Our
one way system includes a redundant telephone
link so you always have a backup connection should there
be any interruption to your satellite link.
Don't
take our word for it... here is a quote from an actual
user "I
found that the performance of ALL my applications were
outstanding, far superior to using Starband(tm).
I have been using the service for about 2 1/2 months
now. It has been great. No outages."
5. What if we
live out of the area or "go south" for the winter?
No problem, we have thousands of
access numbers
across the country. Just call us with the city you need and
we'll look it up! If we don't have access available you can use
another ISP with our service for a reduced rate.
6. What are
the minimum system requirements?
-Pentium III 400MHz CPU -28.8k modem
-128 MB of Ram -Windows 98SE or newer
-Available PCI slot -120 MB free hard disk space
-CD-ROM drive -Clear view of the southeastern
sky
7. How much
can I do with 500 Megabytes like the Gold Plan?
That works out to about 177 web pages PER DAY or
about 150 mp3 (music) files per month.
Actual user
testimonial...
A year and a half ago my wife and I moved to
Door county to live and work. I telecommute for IBM as a
mainframe software developer. I thought I would be OK with a 56k
dial up connection but it turns out the best I can get at our
country location is 26k. Not good. So I started looking around
at alternatives, Cable is available in Sturgeon Bay but they
stopped laying cable 2 miles from our house and have no plans to
bring it out here. DSL is probably still years away.
So I started
looking into two way satellite, specifically Starband(tm). Some
of my associates have tried it and were able to get it to work
for them. So I found a local provider and had it installed. It
wasn't cheap. $850 of hardware and installation plus a $70 a
month fee. A 1 yr contract was also required. Initially it
seemed to be the answer, but after a few months I started having
intermittent disconnects, some of my applications didn't work
any better than dial up and periodically it would go out
completely because of bad weather and the position of the sun.
At certain times of the year the Sun was right behind the
satellite, since the uplink is a radio transmission to the
satellite the sun would block out the signal from reaching the
satellite. So you were effectively offline. I struggled with
this through last fall and other problems like very slow
response times in the afternoon.
As my
contract was nearing it's end with Starband(tm), I started
looking for alternatives. I just happened upon your website
which I still had in my favorites list. I started looking
through your information there and discovered you were offering
a one way satellite internet service. I had heard from other
associates of mine the one-way satellite works with our systems,
but I was a bit skeptical, so I called you and asked if I could
test out my applications on your service. I came into your
office and was able to get online in just a couple minutes. I
found that the performance of ALL my applications were
outstanding, far superior to using Starband(tm). I have been
using the service for about 2 1/2 months now. It has been great.
No outages. Your service has saved me a lot of grief and money
too. I was able to sell my Starband(tm) equipment for about what
I paid for the new equipment for your satellite service, and the
monthly fee is less too. Your technical support is been great
too. I just want to say thanks for bringing this service to Door
County.
