MC DOWELL AND KELLEY ARTISTS OF THE WEEK
11:00 AM - 5:00 AM

The Door County Art League (DCAL) Gallery, Fish Creek, is featuring the artwork of Dorothy McDowell and Lauretta Kelley, Artists of the Week, July 26-Aug. 1.

Dorothy McDowell has been painting plein air in Door County for seven years, taking workshops at Peninsula School of Art with Shelby Keefe, John Poon, Susan Hale and Tom Nachreiner, and at The Clearing with Bonnie Paruch. Dorothy paints with acrylics on canvas, using a tinted background tone that shows through to suggest light, texture, atmosphere, motion and freshness in a scene. For her impressionistic style, she uses quick brushstrokes or dabs of paint overlapped, to create patches of light flowing through her scenes. Her art has been exhibited in juried shows including the Hardy. She has degrees in Printmaking and Art Education. She lives in Sister Bay and winters in Florida where she paints with the Ft. Myers Beach art association.

Lauretta Kelley is passionate about drawing and painting from life and plein air painting. She studies the masters of the post-modern age striving to perfect her skill level based on their work. Her paintings have been exhibited in juried shows at the Hardy Gallery and Miller Art Museum in Door County. She also exhibited at the Link Gallery in Fish Creek where she won an Award of Excellence. Lauretta received an associate degree in fashion design from the International Academy of Design and Merchandising in Chicago and is currently enrolled in the fine art department at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. She belongs to the Iowa Artist Guild and Iowa Watercolor Society. She has homes in Jacksonport and Iowa.

Rogue Theater announces the cast of their upcoming show Alabama Bound.
7:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Director Stuart Champeau, brings to the stage Alabama Bound, written by Charlotte Higgins, monologues from five tenacious women, all living hard lives in Alabama.  Each of the women we meet has a unique point of view, it quickly becomes clear that these women are bound in the sense that they are tied to this place through their history and circumstances.  These memorable women whose voices are seldom heard, but when we take the time to listen, we hear the power, biting humor, tragedy and wisdom they all contain. And, although distinctly Southern, they are dealing with issues that are clearly universal and recognizable to all – aging, health, economic and class. Their stories make for a memorable theater experience.

The first story, 9-1-1, is that of Dixie, (new to the Rogue stage Lori Weir), a raucous, boozy police dispatcher whose long-awaited vacation with her no-good boyfriend is delayed by a desperate call from a child. In the second, Hey, Old Woman, Evelyn, (Lola DeVillers), an elderly nursing home resident, wryly observes life around her until a family secret is unearthed. In No Breathing Room, a housewife, Loretta, (Renee Kujawski), struggles to protect her limited domain from her husband and his tyrannical mother. Disease Dance tells the story of a young beautician, Alice, (Keri Grimsley), who finally realizes her dream of attending a socialite’s elite fund-raiser. And finally, in Unlucky Star, Dominique, (Carrie Counihan), an inmate in the Cheehaw State Prison for Women, tells her heartbreaking story.

Performance dates are July 17-27.  Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30. Sunday matinee at 2:00.  At The Depot PAC, 341 N. 3rd. Ave. Sturgeon Bay.  Tickets $15, available by calling 920-818-0816 or at Greco Gallery and Avenson Photography downtown Sturgeon Bay.
