Northern Door Health & Wellness Ministry continues its Community Health Information Programs with an upcoming presentation on “Preventing and Treating Type 2 Diabetes.” Come hear Carmen Schroeder, Registered Dietician – Nutritionist and Ministry Diabetes Educator, discuss measures to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and the management of the disease. The program will be held on Sunday, June 22 at the First Baptist Church in Sister Bay and will begin at 4:00 pm.
The incidence of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes (the most common form of diabetes) are rapidly increasing. Type 2 diabetes affects 90 to 95 percent of the 26 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes. With extra care and attention, it is possible to prevent the onset of this disease. Certain risk factors such as age, family history and ethnicity cannot be changed, however, making healthy changes in diet and activity can help prevent or control type 2 diabetes.
You are at risk of type 2 diabetes if someone in your family has it, you are overweight, have high blood pressure or if you had gestational diabetes when you were pregnant. A simple blood test ordered by your health care provider can check you for type 2 diabetes. The certified diabetes educators at Ministry Door County Medical Center can provide personalized guidelines on how to manage your diabetes, including understanding your diagnosis and guiding you on a diet, exercise, blood glucose testing and medication, if necessary. Join us for this very informative program on Preventing Diabetes.
