Peninsula Invites Visitors for a Winter Walk to the Memorial Pole
Join Peninsula State Park Naturalsit Kathleen Harris on a Winter Walk to the Memorial Pole on Saturday, February 15, from 10 - 11 a.m. Meet at the golf course parking lot, near the clubhouse. Walk, ski or snow shoe (provide your own gear) a 1/4 mile or less to the Memorial Pole, first erected in 1927 by the Ephraim Men's Club. Visit the gravesite of Potawatomi Chief Simon Onanghisse Kahquados, too.
The Memorial Pole, refurbished over the years, is an excellent example of early twentieth century folk art. Each band depicts history of the Potawatomi Nation as interpreted by the dominant Anglo culture of the day. See the pole, pay honor to Kahquados, and gain an appreciation of Door County's less noticeable heritage.
The program is free but a state park vehicle sticker is required. Counts as a Like to Hike activity (a custom pin program available exclusively at Peninsula). If you need additional information contact Peninsula State Park at 920-868-3258.
