Whitefish Dunes State Park Program iCal

Saturday, August 3 2013 10:30 AM - 5:00 PM
  • What’s up with Dune Thistles?. Interested in learning how you can help the Pitcher’s thistle? Join DNR intern Zach Meunier for an interactive hike at Whitefish Bay Boat Launch. Discover how this federally threatened species is vulnerable to habitat degradation and invasive plants. Did you know that thistle seeds have become a favorite food source for weevil larvae? Researchers from the Chicago Botanic Gardens, Lawrence University, WDNR, and East Carolina University are working together to protect the thistle and understand the threats it faces. Meunier, biology and environmental studies major from Lawrence University, is spending the summer studying the thistle’s unique ecology. His collaborative research includes observing pollinators, mapping sites, studying life cycles, monitoring populations, and discerning the interactions between the thistle and other organisms. Come learn how this work is benefiting Pitcher’s thistle and become involved. Meet at the Whitefish Bay Boat Launch. 10:30 a.m.
  • Flower Power.  Drop by the amphitheater for this petaled program full of color.  Explore flower parts and create a flower of your own design.  2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
