Monday, July 8 2013 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
On Monday, July 8, Fish Creek audiences will have a chance to see the hottest act in independent music when Shovels & Rope takes the Door Community Auditorium stage. Shovels & Rope is a husband-and-wife duo like none other. Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, based in South Carolina, perform as an energetic two-piece band, using two old guitars, a handful of harmonicas, the occasional keyboard, and a drum kit (harvested from a junkyard) to stir up a righteous racket.
Though they only began playing together in 2010, Shovels & Rope has virtually exploded onto the Americana music scene in recent months, playing over 200 dates a year, topping charts with their latest record, O’ Be Joyful, and appearing on shows like Late Show with David Letterman.
The New York Times contends that Hearst and Trent deserve a spot alongside the great legends of American roots music, writing, “If you like Carter and Cash, try Shovels & Rope.”
Shovels & Rope’s punkabilly brand of roots-rock has been receiving significant airplay, but it’s the pair’s raucous live performances that are truly making waves. On stage, Hearst and Trent trade vocals and instruments in an instinctive, organic manner that’s simultaneously loose and tight. Raw and imaginative, free-flowing and insightful, the pair’s panoramic songwriting drives their unforgettable concerts.
Shovel’s and Rope is sponsored by Peninsula Pulse, White Gull Inn, Ecology Sports & Basecamp, The Blacksmith Inn, Good Eggs, JJ’s La Puerta & The Waterfront Restaurant and Wild Tomato.
Shovels & Rope will play at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 8. Tickets for the concert range from $18 to $25. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
