By Nick Freimuth Sturgeon Bay will see another former coach shed his Clippers Red and dawn Columbia Blue of the Southern Door Eagles. Ryan Zuehlke was officially named head varsity football coach this week and will take his playing and coaching experience to the southern part of the county.
Zuehlke follows the lead of Pat McCarty and Derik Jennerjohn in recent years as former Clippers coaches turned Eagles. Zuehlke is the owner and a player for the Door County Destroyers semi-professional football team. After four years coaching both offensive and defensive lines in Sturgeon Bay, Zuehlke was really excited to get the head coaching nod at Southern Door.
Players like Kyle Daoust and Derik LeCaptain will make this transition much easier for the first year varsity head coach. Zuehlke said he is excited to come in with a clean slate and have every player start as equals. No player has an upper hand on day one on a starting spot, Zuehlke said. He added that a state championship is a realistic goal for this team.
