By Nick Freimuth Some spring sports games will simply not be played this year. A number of non-conference games, meets and matches are already being canceled with another impending snow storm in the forecast for this weekend. Packerland Conference Athletic Directors will do everything they can to makeup the conference games that are being missed over the next two weeks due to snow on most diamonds and fields. Some non-conference events simply will not fit into this year’s weather shortened season.
Sevastopol has already canceled its non-conference baseball games against Coleman that was already re-scheduled for Monday, April 16. The Pioneers already know the six-team golf meet for Monday has been canceled as well. Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, Oconto , NEW Lutheran and Peshtigo were all slated to compete in that event. Sevastopol AD Jen Wiessner said, “We will be cancelling (the non-conference baseball game) due to the reschedule needs of the previously postponed conference games.”
The Pioneers are already pushing games like baseball against Southern Door back into May due to rescheduling needs and field conditions. April 2018 will go down as one of the least “playable” April’s in recent memory. Field conditions are not only impacting games, meets and matches but practice. There are only so many drills you can do inside so local coaches and student athletes are getting a little stir crazy cooped up in gymnasiums day after day.
