The Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol/Southern Door High School co-op swim team competed at the Cedarburg Sectionals on Saturday and qualified four swimmers to state.
The first event for the team was the 200 Medley Relay and the group of Luke Bousley, Max McHugh, Brock Aune, and Evan Smith took 1st place in a blistering fast time of 1:39.61, this qualifies them automatically for the State Meet in Madison next Friday. That accomplishment was special in itself but more to come on just how special this race was later.
The 200 Freestyle saw Evan Smith swim a personal best time of 1:57.59 to finish in 6th place, that was followed by Max McHugh winning the 50 Freestyle in 20.57, Luke Bousley in 9th place with 23.82, and Ian Bartz finished 36th with a personal best time of 30.99
In the 100 Freestyle Brock Aune took home 3rd place with a time of 49.75, this swim qualified him for the State Meet next Friday, Luke Bousley swam 52.02 for 7th place and Will Albertson took 20th with personal best time of 58.49, while Ian Bartz’s personal best of 1:07.82 put him in 29th.
Event #9 was the 200 Freestyle Relay and the team of McHugh, Smith, Bousley, and Aune took home first place with a swim of 1:28.99, this was followed by Smith finishing 7th in the 100 Backstroke with a personal best time of 1:00.36
The final event for the team was the 100 Breaststroke with McHugh and Aune sweeping the top 2 spots with times of 53.09 for McHugh and a personal best 59.90 for Aune, Will Albertson posted another personal best of 1:10.00 to take a podium medal in 8th place.
Now back to the 200 Medley Relay where one of the fastest splits in Breaststroke history was posted by Max McHugh. McHugh posted a 22.69 split in the 50 yard Breaststroke leg of the Relay and according to the online site of swimswam this is tied for the 2nd fastest split EVER by any swimmer at ANY level of swimming. It ties the swim of Peter John Stevens from the University of Tennessee and is second only to the time of 22.64 from Chuck Katis at the 2015 NCAA Championship
Up next for the team is the State Championship held at the University of Madison Natatorium on Friday, February 16 at 6:30 PM.
