Never judge a game by a first-half stat line, especially when Payton Pluff is on the court. The Gibraltar Vikings pulled a crucial upset Monday night against the Kewaunee Storm 48-41 at Kewaunee High School. Pluff scored only five points in the first half but exploded for 21 more in the second half to propel the Vikings to victory. Her timely free throw shooting and late-game heroics sealed the much-needed victory for the Vikings.
Gibraltar also benefited from lockdown defense late in the game from Raina Haleen and Abbigael Sitte. Kayla Fallingstad scored two timely three-point baskets late in the second half to spark a run Gibraltar needed to close out the Storm. Karlee Kita added four free throws to keep the Vikings nearly perfect from the charity stripe.
Despite the loss, Kewaunee saw the terrific play from MacKenzie Tlachac (14 points) and Sara Dax (17 points) keep them in the game until the final minutes. The Storm falls to 11-6 overall and 9-3 in the Packerland Conference standings.
Gibraltar, now 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the Packerland, welcomes Green Bay NEW Lutheran (4-7 in the Packerland) to their home court this Friday night for a 7:30 pm tip.
