With only a couple weeks remaining before regionals, area wrestlers had a successful weekend at several different tournaments in some of the final tune-ups of the season.
It was another Saturday and another tournament win for Kewaunee at Deerfield. Every weight class except 285 had someone making the medal stand, with Jesse Steinhorst (145) leading the way with a first place finish. That made it five straight team titles this season for the Storm.
At Pulaski, Luxemburg-Casco used five finalists to a second place, finishing behind Division 1 powerhouse Kaukauna. Lucas Joniaux, Bryce Bosman, Devan Vandenbush, and Nate Lloyd took home top honors with Colton Worachek finishing as a runner-up.
Here are Coach Englebert’s comments and results from Saturday’s Hustisford Invitational and the Oconto Dual from last Thursday.
Saturday was a very good end to a very unusual week. Our team came out more aggressive and ready to wrestle Saturday claiming 3rd place as a team. Very good considering we were scoring with only nine wrestlers. We had good practices Thursday and Friday and stressed to the team that good things happen when they try the things we have been practicing. We have seen that at other meets and this week top to bottom we were ready and trying.
Top finishers were Kyle Conard 106, Griffin Slezewski 113, Ben Kielar 120, and Drew Price 132 who all finished first. Grant Englebert was second at 138 and Jared Conard fifth at 145. Austin Falish also finished third at 106 as a non scorer. Kyle and Griffin dominated their brackets. Ben Kielar won the 106 weight class last season and looked good today at 120. Drew Price won a very tight finals match over a funky Dodgeville wrestler who had been in the rankings earlier this year. Really nice to see 4 underclassman stepping up and Grant very close giving up the lead in the last 30 seconds of his match.
Hoping we can build from this, get a few guys back and be ready for a very tough test Friday at Kewaunee. Due to some other weather delays, the meet was rescheduled from Thursday to Friday. Should be fun to wrestle on a Friday night even if it is away.
At the Dirk Sorensen Tournament in Sturgeon Bay, top finishers included Jeremy Jorns – 1st @182, Peyton Hurth – 3rd @ 126, Ezra Haight – 4th @ 132, Bruce Anschutz- 6th @ 152, Trevor Wilke – 6th @ 195, and Luke Brinkman – 6th @ 220. The effort was good enough for 9th in the 15-team tourney won by Green Bay Preble.
Finally, On Saturday, 22 Youth Southern Door Eagles competed at the Wrightstown Youth Tournament. As girls wrestling continues to grow, Wrightstown ran separate girls divisions. Southern Door boasted five girls wrestlers, some competing for the first time. Individual results were as follows:
1st Place – Zack Lynch, Keny Lynch, Clark LeFevre, Jonah LeFevre
2nd Place – Kyler Laluzerne, Katelyn LeCloux, Trevin Veeser, Trenton Krueger, Colton Valley
3rd Place – Colton Krueger, Austin Ferron, Lance Veeser, Oliver Wilke, Delaney Wilke
4th Place – Chance Dekeyser, Chase Massart, Jaylin Valley, Malaina Veeser, Hailey Veeser, Gavin Geisel
