Sister Bay voters will have their chance to decide on whether a new tax is instituted in the village in the February primary election. A Premier Resort Area Tax of 0.5 percent would be added to items sold, leased, or rented from tourist-related retailers. Village Finance Director Tasha Rass says the money collected from the tax would make a big difference in funding future infrastructure improvements.
When the Premier Resort Area Tax was developed by the Department of Revenue in the late 1990s, Sister Bay was one six communities including Ephraim allowed to enact it by ordinance even though less than 40 percent of the equalized assessed taxable property is used by tourism-related retailers. Rass says more information will be released next week so voters can learn more about the item to appear on the February 20 ballot.
