Sturgeon Bay Athletics have a new front man ready to lead the Clippers starting with the 2018-2019 school year. Third grade teacher Todd Meikle will transition from math, science and social studies to the high school physical education. Meikle will take over for Randy Baumgartner who will retire at the end of this school year.
Meikle is a Sevastopol graduate of 1986 and earned his degree from the University of Green Bay after playing college basketball at East Mississippi Community College. He taught ten years in the Howard – Suamico School District and has been in the Sturgeon Bay School District for five years.
Meikle said, “It’s always been a dream job of mine.” As athletic director his top priority is to make people better, make programs better and encourage and support student athletes.
Todd will move to the high school next school year where he will join his wife Holly who teaches high school English. Their sons Rory and Rex each have attended Sturgeon Bay High School. Rory was a standout athlete and attended St. Norbert’s and will be joining the NAVY. He heads out to basic training on February 8. Younger son Rex is a senior and also stars in multiple sports. Rex will attend the University of Wisconsin Stout and play football next fall.
Meikle is open to exploring co-op opportunities with other area schools and facilitating what is happening with current co-ops like swimming and wrestling. The new athletic director said soccer and swimming will be sports he is excited to learn more about and help grow the programs.
Another major area that needs improvement is the weight room. “Our program is built on how we use the weight room. We as an athletic program need to use the weight room to the fullest and we are not doing that right now. Our athletes need to get in there. (This is) one of the issues that needs to be fixed.”
Meikle had nothing but extremely positive things to say about current athletic director Pat Blizel. He said there is a lot that he hopes to replicate that Blizel did extremely well. Todd wanted to thank Mr. Blizel for the stage that has been set for him and is hoping for a very smooth transition into the position starting July 1, 2018.
