Extremely cold weather conditions the past two weeks have ice anglers heading out to their favorite fishing hole and shanty on Green Bay. Professional Ice Fishing Guide JJ Malvitz says the rapidly formed ice has added great depth since Christmas.
The Department of Natural Resources’ general ice thickness guideline says for new clear ice, says eight inches to twelve inches is needed for a car or small pickup truck to drive on safely. Malvitz says the perch fishing is starting strong in the inner harbors, like Sawyer Harbor and Little Sturgeon. Anglers are having early success with the whitefish bite on deep shoreline breaks on the Green Bay as well, according to Malvitz.
