On alumni night it was the youngest Eagles that soared in Southern Door’s 48-30 non-conference win over Gillett/Suring in Brussels on 104.1 WRLU. The Eagles opened the evening with a pair of forfeits before 120 pounder Ben Kielar battled hard in a 11-7 loss to Andy Lemens. After another forfeit, freshman Grant Englebert got his first win and pin under the lights in 1:32. Gillett/Suring then rattled off four straight wins, including pins by Brock Herzog (152), Sam Davis (160), and Reid Winkler (170). After Evan Blasier picked up another forfeit, Seth Suess put the match on ice for the Eagles with a first period pin. Tyler Lockstein wrapped up the scoring for Gillett/Suring with a pin of his own before Santtu Kiljunen ended the evening with a forfeit.
The young Eagles squad will have a week to learn from their first match of the season before heading to Suamico next Saturday for Bay Port High School’s Battle By The Bay Tournament featuring some of the best schools in the state.
Hard to believe we had our first wrestling meet already. We seem to have traded experience for numbers. Losing 5 very solid seniors of which 3 were state qualifiers is always tough. This year’s Southern Door team is very young and inexperienced but also a good hardworking coachable group. The squad includes 10 freshman, 2 sophomores 4 juniors and 3 seniors. In addition to the freshman two others joined us that have never wrestled before.
The first two weeks of wrestling practice are always difficult with the Thanksgiving Holiday and deer hunting but this year we also had several wrestle off’s to make time for. Happy to have that behind us and moving into some good practice time. Our inexperience showed tonight but I feel our effort was good. Great experience for the freshman and new wrestlers tonight to get that first match.
Tonight we had our first dual meet of the season against Gillett Suring at home for Alumni night. Wrestling started the old fashioned way at 106.

Congratulations to Grant Englebert and Seth Suess on their wins by pin. For Grant it was his first varsity match. Grant came out aggressive and didn’t look back. After two quick takedowns he stayed on the attack and earned the pin. We’ll be looking for several more freshman to get their first wins on varsity at the Battle On The Bay at Bayport December 9th. It will be a very tough test for our young team but valuable experience to build from.
