In a match carried live on 104.1 WRLU- FM, and streamed worldwide on DoorCountyDailyNews.com, the Sturgeon Bay Clippers defeated the Wayland Academy Big Red in a WIAA Division 4 soccer Sectional Final on Saturday night. The Clippers dictated the action from the opening tap, but were unable to tally a goal until 86 minutes 35 seconds into the 90 minute contest.
On a chilly 38 degree evening in Lomira, a corner kick initiated by sophomore CJ Fairchild proved to be the deciding factor. After taking several corner kicks throughout the match, Fairchild’s final attempt triggered the game winning score. Fairchild launched a bending, perfectly lofted ball from the right corner. After passing by the goal, freshman Carson Dvorak rose high off the ground and got a head on the ball from the left post. Dvorak’s header bounded back toward the right post. Sophomore Owen Stevenson, positioned near the right post, was able to put his head on the ball played from Dvorak, driving it to the back of the net, and sending the Clippers back to state.
The Clippers will play in the state semi-final match on Friday, with their opponent and game time pending the seeding meeting. The outcome of this meeting will be posted on DoorCountyDailyNews.com as soon as it becomes available. Regardless, the match will be broadcast live on 104.1 FM, with Nick Freimuth and Peter Kerwin calling the action from Milwaukee.
