It took 110 minutes (regulation and two overtimes) and a shootout to determine Thursday night’s WIAA Division 4 Sectional semi-final match broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU. The Clippers pulled off a 4-3 shootout win after a 2-2 tie after overtime Saint Lawrence Seminary.
Tied at 1-1 heading into overtime, the Clippers fell down 2-1 just 1:12 into the first overtime period. Jaden Stevenson scored his second goal of the night six minutes later at the end of the first overtime. It was the senior’s 161st career goal. Stevenson is now 12 goals behind the all-time state record.
After a scoreless second overtime the shootout was set. The Clippers saw Jaden Stevenson set the stage scoring on the first kick from 12 yards out. Sturgeon Bay fell behind 2-1 and needed another come from behind effort in a game they never led. Adison Benzinger and Ryan Safranski each made their goals and Trent Maas stopped Saint Lawrence Seminary’s fourth penalty kick.
Tied at three goals a piece, the Clippers sent goal keeper and senior captain Trent Maas to the line. Instead of a forward or midfielder, the Clippers went with a goalie. Maas stepped up to the line and delivered a goal and a 4-3 lead, but the Hill Toppers had the final shot (Pictured Above). Maas then had to return to the goal and try to clinch the Clippers victory. He moved left, the kick went left and he denied the potential game tying goal to lift Sturgeon Bay into the sectional final Saturday in Lomira.
Saturday’s sectional final will be played on an artificial surface against Wayland Academy. The match will be broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU and streamed worldwide at DoorCountyDailyNews.com. Pre-match coverage with Coach Todd Maas starts at 6:30 PM. Opening tap will ensue at 7:00 PM.
