The Southern Door Eagles stopped the Peshtigo Bulldogs on a 2-point conversion with 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to hold onto a 21-19 victory Friday night on 102.1 WRKU.
The scoring got underway when Derik LeCaptain ran in from 1-yard out on the Eagles second possession of the game making the score 6-0 after a blocked extra point. That would be the only score in the quarter.
To start the second, the Bulldogs took their only lead of the game on a 3-yard run by Nick Nielson making the score 7-6.
Southern Door quickly responded with another score of their own when Kyle Daoust threw a shovel pass to Sam Gerend on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line to make the score 12-6. That would be followed by LeCaptain converting the 2-point conversion.
That would be the score at the half, 14-7.
Southern Door would put a drive together to start the second half, but an interception in the end zone stalled the drive. That would be the only drive that would come close to scoring as no points were scored in the quarter and the Eagles were winning 14-7.
In the final quarter, the Bulldogs made it 14-13 on a Jared Jandt 1-yard run and failed on a 2-point conversion when quarterback Riley Reif was stuffed short of the end zone on a naked bootleg.
Southern Door would extend their lead to eight on the next series when Daoust ran in from 1-yard out. The touchdown was set-up by a Adam Gutschow 25-yard run to the 15-yard line and an 8-yard run by Nick Baudhuin to make it first and goal.
Peshtigo would have the ball last and score with:29 seconds remaining on Jandt’s second rushing touchdown of the game. The Bulldogs would go for two, but a high snap recovered by the Eagles ended the potential tying play.
After recovering a successful onside kick, Daoust took one final knee in victory formation to end the game.
Daoust finished with two total touchdowns and one interception. LeCaptain finished with his 12th rushing touchdown and a 2-pt conversion while Gerend recorded his seventh receiving touchdown.
The Eagles return home next Friday to take on their rival Sturgeon Bay for Homecoming.
