(Sturgeon Bay, WI) – September 29, 2017 — The Miller Art Museum in downtown Sturgeon Bay today announced the winners of its 42nd Juried Annual exhibition.
The Juried Annual is an annual juried exhibition that has been showcasing the work of Northeast Wisconsin’s artists at the Miller Art Museum, located inside the Door County Library in Sturgeon Bay, since 1975. The body of work that has been exhibited through the years reflects more than 40 years of contemporary work by visual artists working 2-dimensionally throughout the county and region.
Awards were given in painting (oil, acrylic and pastel), photography and glass; winners were chosen from 47 works selected from more than160 entries.
“Santa Maria della Salute,” a skillfully executed pastel painting of the historic 17th-century structure that guards the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, by Richard Geudtner of Sturgeon Bay, was awarded the respected Gerhard CF Miller Award of Excellence.
Melissa Resch of Sturgeon Bay was awarded the Bonnie Hartmann Award for Outstanding Creativity for her lush, richly textured abstract oil painting “Fruta-do-conde.” The piece is part of a series of work created during a 6-month residency in Brazil. Resch’s work garners inspiration from many sources she has personally experienced in her travels and residences around the globe.
Additional winning artists, announced by Curator of Exhibits and Collections Deborah Rosenthal at the awards presentation during the opening reception on Saturday, September 9 are Tom DeMint (Egg Harbor) for his oil painting “Lake Park Bistro,” Stephanie Holznecht (Luxemburg) for her acrylic painting titled “Brighter Days Ahead” and Brian Pier (Egg Harbor) for his oil painting “Summer Shade, Grant Park.” The panel of jurors comprised of Dan Cross, Joye Moon and Leslie Walfish recognized these three works individually, giving them a Juror’s Award.
Cody LaCrosse (Sturgeon Bay) was recognized for his digital photograph, “Smoke Screen,” Katy Moore (Sturgeon Bay) for her glass piece titled “Simpatico” and Rolf Olson (Sturgeon Bay) for his digital photograph, “Milkweed Nebula.” The artists were awarded Special Merit Awards.
This year’s Juried Annual is presented by Camilla Nielsen, Third Avenue Playhouse, the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts and Henk and Buttons Wolst.
Cash awards for Special Merit Awards are $175; Jurors Choice, $125; Gerhard CF Miller Award of Excellence, $175; and Bonnie Hartmann Award for Outstanding Creativity, $100.
The public is invited to a free panel presentation to hear unique perspectives from the jurors to be held on Thursday, October 12, 10:30AM in the main gallery of the museum – the last of this year’s Second Thursday Program Series.
