Kenneth Francis Werkheiser, 88, of the Town of Egg Harbor near Carlsville, Sturgeon Bay, passed away early Thursday morning, September 28, 2017 in the comfort of his home with family at his side.
He was born April 24, 1929 in the Town of Sevastopol, the son of the late Louis Henry Werkheiser and Helen (Simon) Werkheiser. Ken served his country with the United States Army as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne. On January 10, 1953, he married Gloria Audrey Schiefer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Together, they shared 49 years of marriage. Gloria preceded Ken in death on January 14, 2002.
Ken was as a union boilermaker and general foreman for over 37 years, helping repair boilers for powerplants, retiring in 1990. He also drove tractor out west for a period of time.
Ken had attended Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Institute before attending other county parishes.
Music was an integral part of Ken’s life as well as his siblings’. He taught himself how to play the guitar as a young man and played in his own band in Milwaukee for over 25 years. Ken was passionate about recording music as well and appreciated analog recorded music as opposed to digital. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his yard was always filled with coon and bear hounds. Ken was an avid reader and philosopher and often applied what he learned to everyday life.
He is survived by his two sons, Keith (Sandy) of Lily Bay in the Town of Sturgeon Bay, and Terry (Sally) of Sturgeon Bay; six grandchildren, Chris (Beth) Werkheiser, Michelle Hernandez, and John (Michelle) Werkheiser, and Joe (Julia) Werkheiser, Miranda Werkheiser, and Selena (Will Despin) Werkheiser; seven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Helen “Jeanie” Lattimer of Sturgeon Bay.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Douglas (1950), sister, Katie (Stanley) Kazmerek; and brother-in-law, Merton “Mert” Klessig.
His life will be honored with a funeral service held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with Chaplain Mark Richards officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
