The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans came back from a 19-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Freedom Irish in stunning fashion 22-19 Friday night in a North Eastern Conference football thriller. The Spartans got three touchdown runs by Nathan Coisman in the second half and a stellar defensive effort that turned back the Irish in the final minutes to preserve the victory.
Freedom scored on two touchdown passes in the first half by Mattew Verhasselt and shocked the Spartans with a 77 yard reverse by Caden Hofacker with only :23 left in the second quarter to take a commanding 19-0 lead at halftime.
The Spartan defense contained the potent Irish offense in the second half and Coisman scored on runs of 2, 5, and finally 3 yards to give the Spartans the lead for good with 10:10 left in the 4th quarter.
Freedom (3-2, 4-2 overall) had one last opportunity late in the fourth quarter, but failed to convert a fourth and four at the Spartan 18 yard line. The Spartan offense then run out the remaining 4:10 on the clock to complete the incredible comeback. Quarterback Garrett Aissen converted a key third down and ten with a 17 yard scramble to seal the victory.
Luxemburg-Casco (4-1, 4-2 overall), who still controls their destiny in defending their conference title, will now host Clintonville in the Spartan’s homecoming game next Friday night. The game will be broadcast on 96.7FM WBDK and streamed on DoorCountyDailyNews.com starting at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame and kick-off set for 7 p.m.
