Derik LeCaptain accounted for four touchdowns, a two point conversion and two interceptions leading the way for the Southern Door Eagles in their 28-27 thriller over Kewaunee Friday night.
Kewaunee scored on their opening possession in the first when Cody Bultman connected on a 25-yard pass to tight end Andrew Richard on 4th and 8. That would be the only score in the quarter.
In the second, Southern Door tied the game at the 9:57 mark on LeCaptain’s lone rushing touchdown of the game.
Following an interception from the Eagles defense, Southern Door made it 14-7 on a 27-yard pass and catch from Kyle Daoust to LeCaptain on a 4th and 15.
Kewaunee would then throw picks in back to back possessions with one of those going for a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown by LeCaptain. That made the score 20-7 at the half.
Both teams would fail to score in the third.
In the fourth, four touchdowns were scored. The first two came from the Storm who took the lead 21-20 at the 1:51 mark on a Michael Barribeau 1-yd run.
On the Eagles’ next possession, LeCaptain and Daoust would connect again on a 79-yard pass and catch to give Southern Door the lead 26-21 at the 1:39 mark. After a successful 2-point conversion on a 2-yard run by LeCaptain, the Eagles led 28-21.
With 39 seconds left Kewaunee had the ball and found the endzone on a Bultman to Michael Halada jump ball at the goalline to make the score 28-27 Southern Door. The Storm went for two but after the ball from Bultman got tipped it was intercepted for LeCaptain’s second interception on the night.
Southern Door was able to get the onside kick and take two knees to run out the clock.
LeCaptain finished with 127 yards receiving on four catches. Daoust finished 12-of-19 for 192 yards and two scores. Sam Gerend and Andrew Montana also recorded interceptions. Kyle Malcore recovered a second quarter fumble. On the night, Southern Door forced five turnovers.
Bultman finished 18-of-27 for 245 yards with two touchdowns and five turnovers.
The Eagles return home next Friday to take on Algoma.
