Sam Gerend caught a 5-yard touchdown from Kyle Daoust in overtime and with an Andrew Montana extra point, the Southern Door Eagles were a 34-33 winner over Oconto Friday night.
The Eagles fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but quickly tied the game on two rushing touchdowns by Derik LeCaptain (27-yards, 2-yard) LeCaptain would finish with 33 carries for 188 yards and three scores.
Gerend would have the ultimate momentum shifting play in the first half as he intercepted a pass on the 1-yard line and returned it 99-yards to give the Eagles a 21-14 lead. It was Getend’s first of two picks.
Oconto tied the game in the third quarter on Parker James second of three touchdown runs. That would be the score after three, 21-21.
Southern Door would grab the lead halfway through the fourth quarter 27-21 after LeCaptain ran in from 36-yards away. The extra point was no good.
Oconto would have the last drive in regulation and score with 16 seconds remaining. With a chance to win the game a botched snap forced overtime.
In the only time period, it took Oconto four plays to score and take a 33-27 lead. Another missed extra point fail gave Eagles the ball. On a 3rd and 5, Daoust threw a jump ball to Gerend who hauled in a one-handed catch for the game winning play.
On the night, the Eagles defense forced four turnovers.
The Eagles hit the road to take on Kewaunee next Friday.
