Floy M. Born, 95, Algoma, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit after a brief battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 6, 1921 in Clear Lake, WI to Arthur and Eunice (Belle) Swanson. Floy graduated from Barron High School and then graduated from River Falls State College in June of 1941. She then started teaching at an elementary school in Sun Prairie for two years.
She married Orland E. Born Jan 30, 1943 in Waukesha. After the school year ended Floy joined Orland and was with him during his career as a officer in the Navy. After WWII ended they moved to Waukesha and they both taught school there. After the birth of their son, Lee, she stayed home to take care of Lee and then their daughter Janet.
Floy was a very active lady including playing bridge, canning, a very good seamstress, and attended various agricultural events with her husband. The family moved to River Falls in 1966 and her husband took a job with the River Falls State College. Floy went back to school to get her masters as a Reading Specialist. She taught first grade for numerous years in River Falls. Floy taught until Orland retired from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.
They both enjoyed going Polka Dancing every weekend. Floy was also involved in Girl Scouts and loved her flowers. They moved to Algoma where she lived for the last 32 years. Floy always had an open house when it came to feeding family and friends. They started the Retired Teachers Association for Door and Kewaunee Counties. She had volunteered for the Algoma Chamber of Commerce, Kewaunee County Jail, was a very active member of Grace Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed traveling, bowling, reading mystery books and doing decorative German painting. Floy and her daughter traveled all over the world, including, China, India, Galapagos Islands, South America, Scandinavian Countries, Russia, Eastern Europe, Machu Picchu, Per, Cuba and Mexico. Floy and Janet even went on a safari in Southern Africa last summer.
Floy loved the precious time she spent with her husband, children and grandchildren. In January of 1988 they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Orland preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1988.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, life long learner, world traveler and a very sweet lady.
Floy is survived by her two children Lee Edward (Barbara) Born, Berlin; daughter Janet Born, River Falls, two grandchildren Travis Born and Vanessa (Mark) Brotske; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters Eunice (Theron) Kringle and Avis (John) Sumstad.
Family and friends may call at Grace Lutheran Church, Hwy 42, Kewaunee from 1:30 PM until the time of services at 3 PM with Rev. Howard Batt officiating. Burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, Algoma.
