Sturgeon Bay beat N.E.W. Lutheran 5-2 Tuesday in Packerland Conference girls soccer. The Blazers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Afton Wenger in the fifth minute and Abby Czaja in the 16th minute. But the Clippers responded with goals by Kenzie Blau in the 22nd minute, Charlie Pollock in the 31st minute and Caitlyn Smith in the 40th minute for a 3-2 score at half.
In the second half Charlie Pollock scored her second goal in the 51st minute and Anna Fischer scored in the 53rd minute to end scoring.
Coach Bob Desotelle said, “We knew N.E.W. had some players coming into this game and got ourselves in an early deficit before making a few defensive adjustments. Offensively we still need to improve in the attacking third of the field, but we are proud of the team’s resilience when down a couple. We stayed focused and organized in our attacks. Defensively, our adjustments worked well. Again, seniors Vanessa Ortiz and Ashton Spritka played very well. It was good to see Pollock, Blau and Fischer get going tonight. We have a tough match Thursday against New Holstein.”
