A person all too familiar with the tragedy of suicide will be the main speaker at the Empowered Voices Save Lives program in Sturgeon Bay on May 15. Mettie Spiess, who was born and raised in Door County, will share her journey with mental illness, suicidal ideation and her experience as a two-time suicide loss survivor. Barb Johnson-Giese, Behavioral Health Coordinator at Door County Medical Center says Spiess brings a personal perspective having lost two brothers to suicide.
Spiess is the 2016 National Alliance on Mental Illness Education Advancement Award Winner and founder of Hope Heroes Unite. The Empowered Voices Save Lives event is free to the public and will be held at Stone Harbor Resort with a Resource Fair at 6 pm and Speiss’ presentation at 6:30 p.m. on May 15.
