The Packers stayed on the defensive with their second selection of the second round of the NFL Draft Friday night. With the 61st overall pick Josh Jones out of North Carolina State University will help bolster a defensive secondary that was torched in the NFC Championship by Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons. It marks the second time in three years that Green Bay addressed their defensive backfield with their first two picks. It now is just a matter of time to see which class will outshine the other.
Jones has good size at 6’1″ and 215 pounds. As a red shirt junior he was named honorable mention in the ACC. He ranked ninth in tackles and 11th in passes defensed in the conference. Many scouting reports immediately mentioned Jones’ versatility. He was also durable as he started all 13 games for the Wolf Pack in 2016. His :04.4 time in the 40-yard dash proves he is fast enough to play in the NFL.
Green Bay Packers Director of College Scouting Brian Gutenkust addressed the media after the pick. He said, “He (Jones) is really versatile, has shown great speed and we are excited.” Gutenkust said the team’s plan was to get bigger and faster in the secondary and this pick addressed that need.
“We don’t put a lot of expectations on them (rookies) to come in and play right away but we have high expectations.” Gutenkust said his coverage ability and tackling prowess impressed him on the tape.
The Packers Director of College Scouting could not stop bragging about Josh Jones’ versatility. It seems that this pick addresses the void Micah Hyde left in the Packers secondary. Hyde was kind of a jack of all trades and Jones could turn into the same kind of NFL player.
Josh Jones answered questions from local media and responded to a number of questions:
On what it was like to hear his name called:
“Oh My! I just dropped to my knees and thanked the Lord!”
On what’s next:
“I promise my best football is ahead of me.” “I want to get coached up and learn from Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. He is a proven player. I respect his game a whole lot. I am excited to be able to play with a guy like that.”
