On a very windy night, host Sturgeon Bay give up a goal in the 20th minute to Luxemburg-Casco’s Liz Benson, which proved to be the game winner. A gusty north wind favored visiting L-C in the first half but the Clippers rallied in the second half with several hard shots the Spartan keeper defended. Luxemburg-Casco won the non-conference match up 1-0.
Sturgeon Bay Coach Bob DeMeuse said, “We play struggled early to connect passes and organize our attack, but defensively were able to repel numerous L-C attacks. Keeper Becca Osborne had nine saves to LC’s six.”
DeMeuse felt the Clippers built momentum throughout the game. “As the game progressed we gained momentum and eventually had the wind in our favor in the second half when our attacks were more organized and L-C had six saves in the second half. For the Clippers this was a decent first game against a quality D3 opponent. While we have a lot of work to do offensively, we have the players to accomplish the task and defensively we played well most of the game.”
Next up for Sturgeon Bay, Lakeland Union at Notre Dame on Saturday. Conference play begins next week when Sturgeon Bay plays Valders and Kiel.
