After nine months of having the two roundabouts in Sturgeon Bay operating, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reports little if any difficulties or accidents at the new intersections. The roundabouts on Highway 42/57 north of the Bay View Bridge opened last July. DOT Region Communication Manager Mark Kantola says the feedback so far has been very positive.
Kantola says roundabouts are designed to reduce serious crashes and keep traffic moving efficiently. The Wisconsin State Patrol Law of the Month for April is “Roundabout safety: Yielding to large vehicles” Kantola says drivers must yield the right away by providing enough space to large vehicles that are 40 feet long or 10 feet wide who may need to use more than one lane to navigate the roundabout.
